Joined up with guitarist Mark Orchin, drummer Terry Heacock and singer Dave Foster-Smith in "Possum" in late 70's doing mainly original material ala Skynard/Zeppelin. Won South East Melody Maker contest. Unfortunately one band member got extremely pissed before a big gig at The Marquee, London. Needless to say, the band did not perform to it's best ability and split right after the show.

Formed "The National Game" with guitarist John Hogben in '81, teaming up again with drummer Terry Heacock, playing all original material. Did loads of gigs in London and along south coast inc. supporting King, The Waterboys, New Model Army and Wild Willy Barratt. Recorded an independant album which received much local and national airplay. Voted "best unsigned band in Britain" by Radio Caroline.

On the way back from a gig at the Hermit Club, Essex, Steve had a van full of band members and followers ( about 15 people in all ) and the back was full of smoke from you know what! when they got pulled over by the police in the early hours. The police obviously asked the usual questions about what they were doing and where they had been. Then they opened the back, took one look through the haze at all the bodies, smelt the fumes and luckily decided to shut the doors and ignore it all. On further conversation it turned out that the policewoman had heard the band's single played on Radio Caroline. After a brief flirtation with Virgin Record Co. the band split mainly due to lack of direction of where to go from here.

In '89 teamed up again with guitarist Mark Orchin in Sussex folk roots band "Touchstone" with whom he has been performing ever since, at festivals and private functions. Coincidentally, our Darren was drummer in this band for a while around 91/92. Recorded 3 albums (do we still call them albums?) The Night The Snow Came Down (1991), One The Rum(1995) + Winebarrel Jigtarrel(2001), with the recording of a new cd in the pipeline scheduled for 2006 release, to coincide with the band's appearance at next summer's Festivals...

In summer '92 recorded an album with Brighton band "The Great Glow Of Joy..." followed by a short support tour around England and Scotland which included a performance at the "Brighton Centre" in March ' 93.

On a damp drizzly night in the winter of '94 whilst en-route to a gig, Steve's car conked out on the outskirts of Newhaven in the outside lane on the exit of a roundabout. After a few attempts to re-start it he noticed, through the misted up windscreen, that the paintwork on the bonnet appeared to be blistering. Taking a second glance he then saw flames under the bonnet. As he quickly jumped out of the car a policeman, who had seen him stopped, arrived on the scene. He leapt out of his car with extinquisher in hand, yelling at Steve to pull the bonnet release. As the bonnet opened slightly he said "thats burning a bit too much for my liking" and turned away again to call the fire brigade. There was a 15 minute wait for them to arrive. All this time the A259 had been blocked off and the car was slowly burning with Steve's guitar and equipment inside. Luckily the Fire Brigade arrived in time to save the gear (smoke damaged, but not charred), but not the car. To save the night the policeman then gave Steve and his gear a lift to the gig. Another successful night despite the strong smell of burnt plastic wafting around the place.

On Dec 28th, 2000, Steve got together with his old band "The National Game" for a reunion gig (their first for over 16 years) in aid of DOVE (defenders of the Ouse valley estuary) in their campaign to prevent the government building an incinerator on Newhaven's north quay. The sell-out event was a huge success. A "live" cd of that night was subsequently released. Further info from www.thenationalgame.fsnet.co.uk (if it's still up and running)

Sept 2005 saw the release of a new "Steve Porritt" produced cd from Derek Luckhurst entitled "Care Garden" also featuring Terry Hiscock (ex-Great Glow Of Joy) on guitars and Mattiau Hartley (ex-Cure) on keyboards.

July 2006 saw the release of the new Touchstone cd, "Sea Of Providence", again produced by Steve and also featuring our Darren drumming on some of the tracks, to coincide with the band's appearance at this year's Crawley Folk Festival.

From time to time Steve has also been known to stand in on bass with various folk/ceilidh bands including the likes of "3 Sticks" and "The Climax Ceilidh Band" to name but two.
